1. Cut it!

4. Shred it!

No scraps go unused! Even shredded scrap fabrics can be used to create an edgy, contemporary, ethereal look...

This lounge area in the promenade of Bellagio is accented by dancers encased in ice, and crystal beads & fabric shreds dangling from the ceiling.

The shredded fabric and crystal bead design continues inside the event space suspended from icy chandeliers.

Utilizing a similar concept, the backdrop to the band in this cocktail reception is created with shredded fabrics and swags.

5. Print on it!

With the variety of technologies available in wide-format printing, many fabrics can be printed with graphic designs and incorporated into the event design...

Buddha heads and other designs printed fabric, then suspended over cabanas and backlit from inside, create a tranquil feeling at a poolside event at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

A playful graphic pattern is printed on fabric, stretched on aluminum frames, and turned into columns at this event at Mandalay Bay.

…And then again, sometimes it’s just nice to use sheer fabric to soften a room and simply illuminate the drape from behind...

A 12’ wide fan crafted from organic materials is placed behind sheer gauze and illuminated to a soft shimmer inside the ballroom at The Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas.

At the Mirage Las Vegas, paper lanterns dangle overhead as guests dined within fabric-draped canopies of sheer muslin. Candlelight and a soft wash of amber provided a romantic glow.

The 8 Values of a Successful Team acronym CREATIVE ends with “E” for “Effective”.

Brenda Reichert states that “An effective leader is someone that does the right things and avoids doing the wrong things”. Words we live by at MGM Resorts Events. She adds, “Although the Event Manager is at the center of an event’s success, it is the communication, direction, leadership and responsibility expressed by all the leaders that matters. Being effective in all efforts drives the ultimate success of an event. All of the steps we take are put in place so that we can be effective along the way and continue smoothly to the desired end result”.

Jim McCoy quotes Alice In Wonderland “Curiouser and curiouser”!

Jim laments - “Meetings and events everywhere are experiencing an interesting evolution. One common denominator we are all experiencing is that the business cycle has changed in a manner by which we are unaccustomed, and it is coming from directions that we did not anticipate”.

"Smaller budgets were anticipated. However, the extreme edits in lead time and long-term preparation were not. This new equation requires focus on what our clients now expect from us as event professionals. Not to mention the continual awareness of what the competition is willing to do to secure a piece of work”. (Note- as this post was being prepared, a call came in for a "Dinner in Heaven" to be executed for a VVIP client in 4 days!)

2011 may mark the beginning of what some consider the rebound of the economy. Economists debate the validity of this, but cautious optimism remains.

PCMA, The Professional Convention Management Association Annual Meeting “Convening Leaders” is in Las Vegas, right now, as I write this. Among the many relevant topics being tweeted, discussed, and mulled over is that in the special event, convention, and meeting industry, more and more attention is being paid to the ROI of event marketing, incentive programs, and meetings. In a word, Value is King. And Value can be a loaded word.

When asked about his take on the “V” in our CREATIVE acronym – Value Driven – Event Manager, Jeremy Collins, shares a historical perspective. “The word ‘value’ was originally used in the 14th century and means ‘a fair return or equivalent in goods, services, or money for something exchanged.’ ” Pretty self-explanatory.

“Driven” is a far more recent term, first used in 1925. Defined as “having a compulsive or urgent quality” or “propelled or motivated by something.” When you put the two words together, things take shape.

Jeremy continues, “The industry has evolved over the past few years. The booking window is shorter, budgets are tighter, the market is competitive” - customers expect Value. To thrive in 2011 it is essential to be Value Driven through…

1.) efficiency, in both design and operations,

and

2.) creativity, in both design and operations.

We professionals at PCMA all strive to accomplish our client’s objectives – on time and in budget – and to deliver an experience unlike any other. But what makes an event company truly stand out?

Speaking on behalf of MGM Resorts Events, Value for our Las Vegas clients starts with a vast, custom-designed inventory that can be repurposed in a variety of ways, giving clients cost effective alternatives. We showcased this process in the production of the Welcome Reception, and transitioning into the following luncheons. After a fun and naughty romp through The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the last blog post, the time has come for musings on the subject of Innovation. Event Solutions Magazine recently asked what I felt was the best innovation of the past 12 months, as it related to the special event and meeting planning industry. I thought long and hard about the answer, as certainly, there are many. With so many innovative technological advances in equipment, as well as the plethora of internet-based technologies, my top choice would be quite difficult to determine. But after much deliberation, and evaluating the state of the industry from all angles, I came to a conclusion that is decidedly less high-tech.

I feel the industry is on the verge of something very special; something that, in the long run, is going to be of great benefit for the consumers of event-related products and services, as well as the providers.

What is the greatest innovation of the past 12 months? Speaking with the utmost conviction, I feel the greatest innovation is the Power of TRUE perseverance, professionalism, and passion.

Allow me to explain. There is no question the special event and meeting planning industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 3 decades. The exceptional level of product that so many of my colleagues and friendly competitors produce both domestically, and internationally, is nothing short of amazing! I am honestly thrilled, and humbled, to have remained in the company of so many phenomenal professionals for so many years.

But at no time in those 30 years, have there been more economic challenges, sweeping advances to keep pace with, or such a heightened awareness of “value” from clients and planners, as in the past 12 months. Customers demand, deserve, and expect the very best value, and rightly so, they seek until their value criterion has been met. And sophisticated consumers never confuse price with value.

I have seen many persevere as a result of reinventing their businesses, and themselves, into leaner & more efficient operating machines. To persevere, it has become not just important, but absolutely essential to do more- a LOT more, with less- a LOT less. All without ever showing signs of fatigue. To truly succeed in the special event industry of today takes stamina, an iron will, nerves of steel, and an attitude and willingness to constantly strive for better. One must take the hits, and stand back up and be ready for more.

In addition to perseverance, the past 12 months has taught many the necessity of reaching new levels of professionalism. Being “really creative” or “artsy” is no longer an acceptable prerequisite for industry professionals. The days are ending for “wanna-be’s”. Street smarts coupled with academia; a broad range of analytical, financial, & management skills; an understanding of all disciplines of the industry; sales & marketing acumen; and exceptional creativity are now the bare minimum needed to share the field with so many exceptional event pros.

Adapting to changes in the business environment in innovative ways is not easy. These things can only be accomplished if one is truly passionate about what they do. For passion is what makes it all worthwhile!

Real innovation and transformation is accomplished by focusing on goals, not on obstacles. Because in life as in business, it’s You against You.

Thom’s story- When King first asked that I prepare a blog post on the “T” of the MGM Resorts Events “CREATIVE” acronym-Timely, my first thought was “Where in the Hell am I going to find time to write this”?! Week after week passed and finally the time came when he peeked his head inside my office and asked “How is the post coming along, Thommy? Think I can get it tomorrow”? Timely…I don’t think so…. as my desk was buried and my phone was ringing off the hook with clients and vendors needing information NOW. Putting this into perspective…I was asked three months ago to do this.

We can all find excuses not to do something. Is it we are over loaded with work? Stressed out? Are the creative juices just not flowing? Plain old procrastination? 6:00 PM and its time for happy hour? Or possibly all of the above???

I strongly believe in “Passion”. I try to LIVE it, CREATE with it, and to USE it everyday in my life. This “Passion” comes along with a timeframe in designing an event. I know that my vision and proposal needs to be communicated to my client, and as we all know, this alone can be a lengthy process. The contracts, payments and insurance requirements need to be received from all parties involved. Flowers, décor and entertainment need to sourced and secured from around the world. Fabrication of specialty props, signage….labor has to be coordinated. The list goes on…

Then come the Design Meetings, Sales Meetings, Production Meetings, Management Meetings, Pre-Cons, Post-Cons and our weekly staff-wide meeting-Talk Tuesday …how many more meetings does one need? People, I can you tell you this, without each of these meetings, timely execution of every aspect of the event would not happen efficiently. It is in these meetings that our team communicates concerns, exchanges ideas, and addresses opportunities that might arise during the event. One of our philosophies at MGM Resorts Events is that “Planning and Preparation leads to Timeliness”.

The MGM Resorts Events management team developed an Event Process Wheel, in which each process depends on the timely execution of the prior process. Each and every day, this execution route can be seen, and in the end, each and every department will have fulfilled its obligation to the overall production of the event. Again, Timeliness is the key word here. One department cannot effectively do their job without the correct and timely performance from the other.

Clients expect, deserve, and demand an exceptionally produced final product. We as event professionals are expected to deliver that product while working within the confines of profitability and operational efficiency, while maintaining the flexibility to address the unanticipated variables that frequently occur in the event industry.

We at MGM Resorts Events accomplish this while producing 800+ events a year by Thinking and Being Ahead of the Curve.

8 Values of a Successful Team-Accountability

As we continue to strive in “living” our company values, the “A” in the MGM Resorts Events “CREATIVE” acronym has very special meaning. When asked, we’ve found that most people on all levels simply want to be held accountable, with clear and concise direction. This makes it possible to focus of goals, not on obstacles.

The legendary UCLA coach, John Wooden, recently passed, but he left with us so many meaningful and wonderful thoughts. One of my personal favorites is “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do”.

Lenny Talarico, CSEP, heads the corporate event sales department of MGM Resorts Events. He operates in a world of accountability everyday. Below are just a few examples of his impeccably produced events.

On the subject of accountability, Lenny channels his child within and muses…

“One of my all-time favorite childhood stories is the Italian classic, Pinocchio. The story, written by Carlos Collodi, first appeared in 1883, but really enjoyed worldwide success after the 1940 animated classic was released by Walt Disney. I remember seeing the animated version on the big screen as a child. The cornerstone of Walt Disney movies is and has always been movies with messages. The take-away from Pinocchio is, of course, a fairly straight forward one, “listen to your parents, don't tell lies, and do the right thing."

The entire movie is about being accountable. The main character learns in the roughest of circumstances what happens to little boys who are not brave, truthful, and unselfish. He is tricked, cheated, lied to, and kidnapped, sometimes with his own consent as he ignores his conscience. The film clearly portrays how consequences are a result of our actions. One only need listen to the lyrics sung by Jiminy Cricket and look no further for a lesson on accountability, "always let your conscious be your guide". Accountability is that little voice each of us has in the back of our head, it is our own personal Jiminy Cricket telling us “do the right thing, be responsible for your actions".

As leaders, the lesson for us is clear; you must accept responsibility for the results (good or bad) you allow to be created. Leaders must be accountable for the consequences of their and their team’s actions, or in some cases-consequences due to inaction. When something goes wrong, or a project does not turn out as intended, leaders who practice “100% Accountability-0% Excuses” need to look inward to explore how the actions taken impacted the result.

Rather than playing the blame game, or pointing fingers at external causes, leaders who practice accountability seek to understand their contribution to a problem, in doing so they learn and grow in response to those challenges.

When all individuals within an organization adopt the concept of personal accountability, there is less blame placed on others and more focus on moving forward to achieve the goals of the organization.

Being 100% accountable is not always easy; undoubtedly each of us will face challenges, its part of life. How we choose to handle those challenges defines who we are as leaders. The simple way to stay focused on accountability is clear, listen to Jiminy Cricket; "take the straight and narrow path and when you start to slide, give a little whistle and always let your conscious be your guide."

Better words could not be spoken.

Continuing with the CREATIVE acronym, the 3rd Value, Enthusiastic, is one that carries the passion and love one has for their work and for those they collaborate with on a daily basis.

We all know few things are more contagious than enthusiasm. It’s been said, “Leaders are responsible for the Charisma of the organization”. Truer words could not be expressed! This is manifested every single day in the spirit and attitude of the entire team.

Jim Grifall, Director of Event Design, has achieved much success spearheading MGM MIRAGE Event’s involvement in media related events, PR, Sales & Casino Marketing events of all varieties. The results he garners are all excellent examples of the enthusiasm Jim infuses in all of his work.

His comments on enthusiasm are personal and heartfelt…

“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all we really need to make us truly happy is something to be enthusiastic about. For a professional event producer, the secret to being enthusiastic is to embrace everything that comes into your life; attend every event you can, look over, under, around and through it. Scrutinize it, pick it apart and put it back together again. Feel amazed, feel disgusted, feel awe, feel disappointed, but feel.”

“Enthusiasm is not the same as just being excited.” Jim continues. “One gets excited about going to an event; one becomes enthusiastic about creating or building an event. Get enthusiastic about your own dream. This excitement is like a forest fire – you can smell it, taste it, and see it from a mile away.”

“The more generous we are, the more joyous we become. The more cooperative we are, the more valuable we become. The more enthusiastic we are, the more productive we become. When I become enthusiastic about creating an event, I feel all of that: joyous, valuable and productive - it becomes a Golden Moment for me.”

As we travel down the list, the quality that might possibly be most inherently critical to a high-performing team is Respect. Respect manifests itself in acknowledging others and valuing their contributions, and engaging them in decisions and operational activities.

In conceiving the opulent designs when producing the extraordinary event “Reign” at Bellagio, Diane Butner exhibited a deep respect for her colleagues in every phase of the design process. “Being open to other people's opinions, ideas and design concepts during our collaborative design process has always been a win-win situation”, Diane shares. “It not only produces innovative, top-notch designs, it fills the design team with a feeling of pride and satisfaction.”

The strength & effectiveness of an organization is increased dramatically by actively engaging, empowering, and trusting those that work for and with you. And a deep and profound respect for creative partners and vendors associated with the production yield results that exceed expectations.

Rrivreworks adds some exquisite elements to the unique gated entryway leading to the event space transformed into a magnificent Russian Palace. Along the way, the beauty is magnified by interactive performers bedecked in glorious flowing costumes designed by Entertainment Plus.

On a more intimate scale, the beautiful purple hues that Diane has infused into the above event are enhanced by Chameleon Chairs’ one-of-a-kind designs and the stunning floral creations that MGM MIRAGE Events is known for. MGM MIRAGE Events is extremely proud to have recently received the Spotlight Award for “Event Company of the Year” by Event Solutions Magazine. The award, presented at a ceremony held at CityCenter’s beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Las Vegas, tops off a very productive year. Despite the current economic situation, the dedicated team at MME, together, realized many exceptional accomplishments including significant increases in the number of events produced, sales revenue, and profitability.

More importantly to our cherished customers & partners, value-driven, innovative designs remain the focus of our core business: unique event productions for those specializing in experiential marketing, corporate meeting planning, incentive trips, & social milestone events.

Engaging our entire team in “living” our company Values is the cornerstone of our success. Five years ago, we began an all-encompassing quest to define a strategic plan. The plan includes a specific Mission and Vision, which appear on the right side of this blog. The list of Values is the third critical component. Gung Hay Fat Choy

Chinese New Year, or the Lunar New Year, is one of the most significant celebrations found in the Asian culture. Annually, our team of superb culinary, technical, entertainment, and design professionals produce an exceptional gala for 2500+ International VIP Guests.

This month we celebrate The Year of the Tiger at Aria Las Vegas. Excitement is in the air in anticipation throughout the city!

As the ancient Chinese proverb states, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Please step this way —as we make the miles disappear— to a land steeped in abundant customs.

A previous Special Event Magazine Gala Nominee-"The Year of the Rat" is the first sign of the Chinese zodiac. Symbolizing wealth, charm and order, this icon was the impetus for the design of this celebration at Bellagio Resort.

Enticing, golden-boxed invitations were crafted to emulate Jianzhi, an ancient technique of Chinese paper cutting, and delivered to guests overseas. The window flower process of Jianzhi was referenced in various style elements throughout the event.

A spellbinding performance in the porte-cochère of multiple venues, featured a traditional lion dance sourced directly from China. Guests cheered at the acrobatic endeavors of performers who balanced, danced and jumped from pole to pole, seemingly defying gravity. The dancing lion paraded guests through Bellagio to the cheers of thousands of cheering guests lining the public areas.

To enter the event space, guests traversed a boscage of manicured tangerine trees, oncidium orchids, bromeliads, and twisting pneumatophores. The floribunda flanked a centrally positioned pergola constructed of illuminated scrolling ironwork. Hand-carved, faux-stone Foo Dogs acted as guardians of the evening with their mythical powers.

Inside the ballroom, over 850 linear feet burgundy and golden crystalline drapery were installed to enshroud the 46,000-square-ft space. The drape provided a backdrop for authentic décor to coalesce with the latest in modern technology, as well as fabulous cars on display as prizes.

The parasol, which originated 2,000 years ago in China, played an integral role in the scenic design. We incorporated 180 oversized, hand-painted umbrellas and paper fans throughout to add authenticity to the event. Umbrellas adhered to mahogany Shoji-style screens were accented with 12-foot lengths of bamboo blossoming with fresh orchids and bear grass.

Twelve-foot diameter steel valances were rigged around the perimeter of the space to highlight large gold and garnet medallions signifying The Year of the Rat. Fabrics and fringe imported from the Far East wrapped illuminated sconces on each side of the medallions.

The ballroom ceiling was bedecked with 6-ft. tall floral and willow structures supporting illuminated crystal chandeliers. Hundreds of feet of crystal beads dangled within 5’ x 14’ aluminum frames, embellished with sheer fabric glowing from LED lighting. An additional 350 yards of firecracker crystalline was swagged from strategic points to create intimacy within the expansive space.

Guests savored every moment of the experience in golden Chameleon Chairs that encircled tables draped in Cloth Connection's alternating garnet, gold and mandarin linens, each embroidered with trailing vines.

Hand-blown crystal compotes, filled with micro-beads, Kerio roses, golden cymbidiums and Mokara orchids, sat centered on a glass Lazy Susan. Place settings included appropriate Chinese and American flatware and a hand-tied menu accented with a Swarovski crystal keepsake.

Bellagio master chefs worked tirelessly to create a meal worthy of the greatest ancient dynastic rulers. An attentive waitstaff served each course butler-style from large platters. Accompaniments to the meal were set on the Lazy Susan, as is traditional. Shark Fin Soup in hollowed-out coconuts were featured on the 9 course menu.

A 40-foot square entertainment platform was constructed in the round, beneath a 40-foot and 20-foot round truss ring. Fabrics billowed from the truss to serve as projection surfaces, and to assist in concealing dozens of intelligent lighting units, projectors, color blasters, audio equipment, and confetti cannons.

The central platform and attached runways were finished in a high-gloss, black laminate surface which accentuated the performers. Local dancers interfaced with well-known Chinese artists.

A Birthday Celebration- Gala Award Nominee

Guests meandered through an English garden to celebrate the life-long memories for twin sisters marking a milestone birthday. Blooming floribunda, meticulously groomed topiaries and a butterfly sanctuary were combined to nestle inside an intimate ballroom environment.

Even the family pets were painstakingly recreated from fresh floral and were playfully perched on a tuft of Kentucky Blue Grass.

Two hundred and twenty friends and family entered through towering stone garden gates into a private orangerie. Towering centerpieces, a 10-tier caked enhanced with fresh product and ceiling chandeliers of crystal and florals used a staggering 38,345 fresh floral blossoms.

Nirvana- Gala Award Winner

Good Karma…

Transcendental overtones treated guests to a state of Nirvana. Highlights included an entry “tunnel of enlightenment” leading into a lush garden and reflecting pond in the ballroom foyer. An event space layered with imported saris and embroidered textiles, complete with elevated rotating lounges, was created. A five-course gourmet meal was served to guests at tables dressed in vibrant silks and covered with batik-dyed umbrellas. Each of the 150 centerpieces was different and unique from one another.

The Passion of L’Affaire-Gala Award Winner

Verdigris gates opened to reveal a romantic botanical paradise. Manicuredhedging, stone sculptures, and blooming vignettes accented the formal gardens.

The ballroom was festooned with stately floral chandeliers and scrolling fleur de lis.A stage platform designed as an Impressionist’s canvas descended from the ceiling unveiling a variety of dancers and acrobatic performers.

An Enchanted Evening-Gala Award Nominee

Perfumed impressions of plumeria and lavender filled the forest. Dusk approached as the evening light and haze created a magical playground for fairies and nymphs. In the distance a unicorn wandered aimlessly while colorful butterflies fluttered upon floral-laden branches.

The five human senses were titillated throughout the evening while attention to the smallest detail enabled guests to begin a journey into a childlike fantasy.

The media coverage of the various Grand Opening festivities of CityCenter has been remarkably extensive and comprehensive. And it goes without saying that MGM MIRAGE has given the community of Las Vegas, and indeed the world, something very special in architecture, design, art offerings, room product, and certainly-exceptional convention, meeting planning, and event opportunities.

Over the past few weeks, MGM MIRAGE Events has had the pleasure, as well as the challenge, to design, execute, and produce some of the most significant events of our 12 year history-all on the stunning CityCenter campus. And not a day goes by without our friends, clients, and associates asking “When can we see pictures”?

So, for the first time, unencumbered by excessive written descriptions, allow us to unveil to you in vivid detail, a photo journal (in no particular order) of the momentous “first events” MGM MIRAGE Events produced at CityCenter. Enjoy!

A stunning lounge environment was produced in the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Ballroom. Every piece of furniture in the next few photos was designed, built, and inventoried by MGM MIRAGE Events. The only exception is the dining chairs.

These laminated and brushed metal tables were designed to suspend freely from the ceiling. Note the grid work with dangling vases of flowers overhead.

Clear Lucite buffet structures ensured an open feeling in which delicacies and florals seemed suspended in time. Renowned chef Pierre Gagnaire delighted guests’ palettes.

A bevy of stunningly costumed models provided moments of delight throughout the hotel-emerging ethereally as an elevator door opened, whisking by in rickshaws as guests pulled into the valet area. Each was a living testament to the unparalleled intimacy and sophistication of the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas.

Every woman in attendance wanted a pair of the beautiful “fan” shoes.

One of the many highlights of the evening was our Snow Geisha performing on the terrace through a floor-to-ceiling glass window-with an amazing view of the Las Vegas strip! Every design element was seamlessly fused with the talents of entertainment guru, Doug Johnson.

Violin Virtuoso and Mandarin Oriental “Fan”, Vanessa Mae, provided the climax to the evening with a performance that dazzled the senses.

For an exclusive VIP Preview event prior to Aria opening its doors to the public, it was essential the stunning architecture of the property be the main focus. Every design element, food station, and interactive performer was strategically integrated into the surroundings to augment and energize guests as they experienced Aria for the first time-ever!

Outside the Viva Elvis Theater, the new show by Cirque du Soleil, oversized recreations of Elvis’ actual guitars were perched within the setting. Models in clinging, white vinyl were among the bountiful eye candy touches masterfully orchestrated by Barry Morgan.

Atmospheric performers on unique instruments such as this 12’ tall harp were strategically positioned throughout the event space.

Kicking off the Grand Opening festivities were a series of media events. Designs for each were tailored specifically to the property being unveiled to the public…

A custom-crafted, Steel and Lucite presentation backdrop was designed for the opening of Aria.

To highlight the importance of the developments LEED certification, a ribbon was crafted from recycled plastic bottles and imprinted with the Vdara and LEED logos.

We also crafted beautiful monument signs for each property, signifying the LEED certification.

Mandarin Oriental’s ribbon was created with fresh ginger blossoms. Taiko drummers, and lion dance, and a Feng Shui master were included in the ceremony.

The opening of CityCenter has changed Las Vegas for all time. For those with an appreciation of design, fine art, world-class architecture, and the best entertainment and food offerings ever assembled, CityCenter is unparalleled.

As a meeting, convention, and event destination, CityCenter offers clients a diverse array of sites for every need. The campus is also conveniently connected to Bellagio and Monte Carlo via a state-of-the-art tram.

CityCenter: Destined to be one of the great urban places of the world-King Dahl

Project CityCenter first commenced in 2004. In the autumn of 2005, eight events in four days were produced at Bellagio to expose world-class architects, designers, engineers, and city planners to the forward-thinking approach of this development project. The multi-day summit included meetings and events to convey the scope of CityCenter to those playing important roles in the ambitious, multi-billion dollar development.

In celebration of the 2009 Grand Opening, it seems fitting, four years later, to unveil the stunning events that composed The CityCenter Summit.

Perfection in every detail was critical as concepts were developed to portray the individual message of each event.

Event #1: Board of Director’s Dinner

A dinner for the Board of Directors was planned at Sensi Restaurant. Understated sophistication was key in providing a dining and meeting experience for these top executives.

Three tables crafted from faux-granite and solid oak were built. Ultra-suede and Lucite inlays provided a reprise from standard linens.

CityCenter logos were embroidered on linen napkins rolled into hand-carved rings placed on leather placemats.

Floral centerpieces and room accents reflected the earthen design of the restaurant.

Event #2: Welcome Reception-From the Ground Up

The summit kick-off was an outdoor patio reception at Bellagio. The theme “From the Ground Up” was chosen officially launching the groundbreaking for CityCenter.

Construction girls in overalls and hardhats welcomed guests amid piles of rock and dirt containing oversized blueprints and signage.

On stage, a giant puzzle was assembled by our frolicking “construction team” prior to presentations by executives.

Blueprints emblazoned on clear Lucite dangled from the overhang. Construction tools were included in florals for blueprint-wrapped highboys and glass and steel buffets, as well as encased in acrylic tables surrounded by white furniture. Eight-foot long communal highboys encased screws, bolts, and pencils inside.

Appetizers were offered from LED illuminated trays with a glowing CityCenter logo.

Event #3: VIP Breakfast and General Session

The opening VIP breakfast set the progressive tone of the entire multi-day event.

Steel and Lucite buffet tables were filled with fresh fruit and topped with florals in platinum vases. Huge aluminum sconces were positioned against platinum drapery and held an 8-foot tall floral vase.

Guests sat at square, frosted-glass and mahogany tables topped with contemporary florals.

As breakfast ended, drapes parted revealing a stunning, 90-foot wide set of letters spelling out “CITYCENTER”. Guests walked through the letters into the general session. Bowed panels of polycarbonate were suspended along the walls featuring refractive lighting.

Within the stage were 10’X10’ checked panels simulating the invitation, and drapes of steel beads illuminated with gobos cascaded from flyrails.

Event #4: The CFO’s Luncheon

A luncheon to discuss the economics of the project immediately followed breakout sessions. The room needed to be changed over in a matter of minutes so chairs and schoolroom tables were hustled out one side of the ballroom while Chameleon Chairs were brought in on the other.

Tables were draped with blue and platinum linens topped with hand-blown glass incorporating arrangements of dwarf callas and river rocks.

Event#5: Breakfast and General Session

The following day, the purpose of the session was to discuss the sustainability of the project. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle was the mantra. Remember, this was very forward thinking 4 years ago, before “green” became the household word it is today.

We reduced the amount of décor in this area to epitomize simplicity. In an effort to reuse, we used the square frosted-glass and mahogany tables from the previous day. Recycled materials like packing popcorn, rubber bands and cork were used to fill glass vases topped with florals. Linen runners were sewn from recycled fabrics.

The following general session featured keynote speaker, Former Secretary of Labor, Alexis Herman. Her message centered on the importance of diversity. This general session room featured a seamless digital image of clouds, and butterflies with built in video screens. Large panels of clouds and butterflies graced the walls.

Event #6: The Futurist-Watts Wacker

Following the Diversity Presentation, guests were escorted to an appearance by world-renown Futurist, Watts Wacker, who intrigued guests with up-to-the minute forecasts of opportunities that lay on the horizon. His multi-media presentation ranged from new consumer and economic trends to technological advances, and shifts in society and business. With a trend-setting development like CityCenter, Mr. Wacker’s presentation was timely.

The presentation was delivered from a stage of curved steel panels in sheer copper fabric. Earth-toned centerpieces topped tables covered in gold patchwork overlays.

Event #7: CITY SCENE

A final night extravaganza inspired by CityCenter sparked the theme “CITY SCENE”. This opportunity gave attendees their final chance to experience the high-energy and contemporary style of the project.

Inside the cocktail reception, guests were greeted by a performance artist/DJ that pulled music from an iPod and added percussive electronic beats. An aerialist soared with spatial grace overhead.

As a techno beat blasted through speakers, a ballet of Segway riders swirled throughout the crowd to reveal “CITY SCENE”.

Huge 3-dimensional letters now spelled out “CITY SCENE” for guests to walk through into a simulated city of the future with dazzling adaptations of city life.

Performance artists climbed and danced along frosted walls illuminated with video interplay of rainfall inspiring open umbrellas or images of wafting clouds rolling by.

The bustle of this new city “lifestyle” continued to an electronic symphony’s contemporary scores. During performance, musicians would float up and down on motorized platforms. Guests also observed dancers on suspended walkways 10 feet above the floor.

The “daily life” continued as attendees dined on exquisite fare. Custom buffets included a contemporary fondue station with morsels dangling from crystal spears above the fondue. Wheat grass was encased inside clear buffet tops evoking freshness.

A sushi chef worked from a display incorporating a 1,500 gallon acrylic fish tank and motorized conveyor belts. A huge circular ice bar displayed caviar, and artistic desserts were found spinning from a tower of acrylic and steel.

Circular bars surrounded the CityCenter logo as artists continued to climb, and fly. Another bar was backed by a 22’X40’ replica of a condominium complete with residents playfully performing tasks on laptops and cell phones in view of the voyeurs below.

As the energy raged on, a kabuki drop exposed Earth, Wind, and Fire who kept guests dancing until the early hours of the City Scene morning.

As displayed in the previous posts, Las Vegas has some of the most beautiful and unique outdoor venues in the nation. As MGM MIRAGE Events celebrates the conclusion of summer and the arrival of the gorgeous autumn weather, there is no better setting to showcase than the stunning Mandalay Bay Beach!

With a capacity to hold 3500+ guests, the expansive pool complex at Mandalay Bay features a wave pool washing ashore to a large, pristine beach in which guests can party the night away feeling the sand between their toes.

For a recent party that totally ROCKED at the beach, Encore Productions assisted with a dramatic a laser show and a 10 minute fireworks extravaganza blowing guests’ minds as the elaborate lighting effects reflected into the glistening water below.

In addition to the beach and wave pool, the rambling complex also offers a lazy river, additional pools in the south, east, and west lagoons, dozens of cabanas, and ample room for interactive entertainment.

Ice Occasions carved a large throne for use as a chilly photo op.

The jewel of the Mandalay Bay Beach is a large stage jutting into the water in which guests can get up close and personal with bands and entertainers while standing knee-deep in crystal-clear water right at the stage’s edge. Here, the rockin’ Bare Naked Ladies, and the legendary Styx, perform for adoring fans.

Intimate patios with gorgeous fireside and fountain settings; large, sparkling pools and sandy beaches; even swimming with the dolphins! Las Vegas offers an outdoor venue for every style of event. And when enhanced by the visionary event producers at MGM MIRAGE Events, the guest experience is second to none!

Poolside in Las Vegas, continued-King Dahl

Continuing with last week’s blog post and with a glimpse into outdoor events, what could be more fabulous than swimming with the dolphins? At a summertime breakfast event at The Mirage, guests got a special treat as they dined in The Dolphin Habitat. An exclusive dolphin show was prepared just for a select few…

During breakfast, these magnificent creatures swam and frolicked as guests looked on from cheery orange suede lounge furniture groupings and patio tables adorned with Orange Jaguar linens topped with fresh, tropical flowers.

Guests dined on menu items prepared by the chefs at Mirage Catering that included fresh fruits served from halved pineapples and yogurt parfaits.

The Signature at MGM Grand offers an intimate patio setting ideal for daytime weddings and evening gatherings. A palette of bold crimson proved to be the perfect color to add drama to this cozy cocktail party. Red ultra-suede furniture was arranged throughout so guests could enjoy a glowing firepit.

Guests were welcomed to the event space by flirting Crazy Horse girls perched inside of custom-built LED frames encircling the environment.

Petite, mahogany tables were used to display delicacies created by chefs at The Signature.

Lucite luminaries encased floating candles and suspended red roses in water. These beautiful, glowing accent pieces were positioned around the outer patio wall providing gentle illumination.

Poolside in Las Vegas-by King Dahl

Las Vegas is famous for many things. Not last on the list is the summer heat. But the truth is, while temperatures are often over 100 degrees during a 2-3 month period in the summer, our springtime, late summer, and fall are absolutely gorgeous. And with wonderfully warm evenings in which to enjoy the outdoors, the city of Las Vegas has some of the most picturesque poolside event venues in the country.

The Summer of ’09 is coming to a close, and now we’re on the way to what promises to be a lovely autumn. I feel it’s the perfect time to share some favorite patio and poolside events. Over the next couple of weeks, we will feature some scrumptious settings, scattered throughout an exquisite collection of outdoor venues in Las Vegas.

Outside at the stunning Four Seasons Las Vegas, a quaint, meandering pathway connects the Fountain Terrace wedding site with a glistening pool. Hand-carved, faux-wooden arches, airroot clusters, Buddha heads, and lots of glass-encased pillar candles were used to create a feeling of nirvana for guests to enjoy as they proceeded from one area to the next. Swank washed hues of amber over the treatment.

Gold satin along with bountiful clusters of blood red roses & hanging amaranthus added drama to this chuppah on the Four Seasons Fountain Terrace. Chameleon chairs were covered in lily-belle gold chiffon covers custom-made by Wildflower Linens. Stagehouse built our custom, high-gloss, golden aisle runner. Note the illuminated wax spheres behind the chuppah. These were placed on existing pedestals within the fountain, adding a warm, ambient candlelit glow.

A comfortable lounge environment was created with suede ottomans, a newly-designed 8’ long coffee table, and Envel acrylic & steel panels. This setting was specifically designed for guests to feel calm and serene as the evening breeze softly brushes away the hustled pace of the foregone day.

Large, illuminated orbs created a sense of drama as they reflected into one of several popular pools at the MGM Grand Resort. Taylor Creative’s roto-molded spheres are a favorite design element due to the fact that they are operate with battery operated LED’s that are controlled by remote.

A multi-tiered truss stage platform built by MGM Grand Productions helped create a poolside ultra-lounge complete with dancers and performers…

…including an aerialist suspended by a crane, hoisted over the hotel!

An Extraordinary Breakfast Event in the Exhibit Hall-by Lenny Talarico, CSEP

With the current media attention painting a bleak picture of the convention/exhibit business throughout the nation, there’s no need to look further than Las Vegas to witness how industry leaders have beaten the odds to do what they do best, confidently sell their unique meeting and exhibit space.

The Convention Sales Team at Mandalay Bay Las Vegas rank among the best in the industry when it comes to getting the message out to their customers, and rightfully so. The Mandalay Bay Convention Center is the fifth largest in the US and the largest meeting facility on the strip. It encompasses 1.7 million sq. ft. of meeting space. The Mandalay Bay Events Center has the capability to seat 12,000 attendees in a full arena setting. Additionally, there are four pillarless, high-ceiling ballrooms ranging from 31,000 to 100,000 square feet, the latter designated as the largest 'mega-ballroom' in the nation. Breakout space can accommodate more than 75 simultaneous meetings.

With specifications like these, the sales team has an advantageous position of being able to offer amazing value propositions to customers. However, as the saying goes, you cannot sell what you do not show.

Recently, MGM MIRAGE Events partnered with the convention sales, services and catering teams in hosting a group of top industry expo clients on a tour to experience the extraordinary Mandalay Bay offerings.

The finale of this exclusive, 2-day presentation was a breakfast in the Shoreline Exhibit Hall. There were a few ground rules set down at the beginning of the planning process.

The 7:00AM breakfast was to be set for 100 invited guests as an island in the middle of the 358,000 sq. ft. exhibition space.
The room was to remain open and empty so attendees could experience the vastness of the space.
It was to be a spectacular setting designed to highlight not only the space, but also the superior food, hotel service, and the capabilities of MGM MIRAGE Events.

When I think of breakfast, the first thing that comes to my mind is orange juice direct from the grove. Not sure why, as I was born in South Philly and I can assure you we did not have orange groves anywhere near my neighborhood. I do recall childhood memories of family trips to Florida and stops at roadside stands where we would pull off to sample fresh-squeezed juice, which was always exciting for “city folk”. I would be remiss if I did not admit that Bing Crosby pitching juice on TV is among my early memories..."Minute Maid, there's no doubt about it". For these reasons, the inspiration for the breakfast revolved around the color orange. I thought it the perfect bright and cheery 7:00 AM wake-up call.

The space was designed to work as a buffet flow, and we designated approximately 12K sq. ft. (of the total 358K sq. ft.) on which to float an island of pure white carpeting, provided thru Freeman Exhibit Services.

Our custom-designed LED credenza buffets juxtaposed among curving, 8-foot tall vertical serving units featured omelet stations as well as imported fish stations’ offering varied selections of cream cheese spreads. As a special treat to provide a sense of home for many of the invited guests, bagels were shipped directly from NYC courtesy of HH Bagels

A distinctive focal point which anchored the space was a 32’ wide by 16’ tall wall unit complete with recessed display shelves, accent lighting, and a custom graphic design depicting orange groves and blossoms. To create an open perimeter for the environment, we positioned 20-foot tall aluminum towers adorned with white Manzanita branches accented with fresh oranges. Avocado drape flanked the structures. Oversized lanterns illuminated the environment with distinctive lighting designed by Encore Productions.

Breakfast tables topped with Fire Orange Olympus Linens punctuated the space and were surrounded by White Leather Chairs courtesy of Lounge 22.

Utilizing the resources of Mayesh floral wholesalers, the MGM MIRAGE Events floral team created stunning centerpieces. The design incorporated fresh oranges, with green hydrangeas, chocolate roses, peonies and gerbera daisy, accented with green amaranthus. Stainless steel spheres added interest into the design with a hi-tech flair.

A dramatic and utilitarian focal point was created in the center of the space by way of a freestanding floating buffet and ice curtain. Shelves suspended among strands of ice blocks provided the ideal setting for Mandalay Bay Executive Chef Sean Dicicco and his amazing team to display selections of yogurt shooters, and fresh berry parfaits. Ice Occasions facilitated the installation of this eye catching element.

The Mandalay Bay Catering team arranged an executive coffee station by Espresso Amore, which served imported blends and provided guests the opportunity to sample gourmet cappuccinos and lattes.

As guests dined, they were treated to the divine talents of Alizma, a sister act of triplet violinists as seen on NBC's hit television show Americas' Got Talent.

The primary goal of this exclusive breakfast event was to experience the vastness of the space and capabilities of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. To ensure guests received that message in a unique way, special arrangements were made to transport them by deluxe motor coaches provided by AWG Inc.

As a surprise to the guests, the busses drove directly into the building circling the vast exhibition space allowing attendees’ to experience this amazing facility. Once the circle thru the facility was completed, guests exited the motor coaches into the stunning breakfast environment, and were cheerfully greeted with a fresh glass of Orange Juice…naturally.

The Young and The Restless Las Vegas Dream Wedding-King Dahl

The WINNERS of the Las Vegas Dream Wedding at The Signature at MGM Grand! One lucky couple said their vows with Y & R stars Christian LeBlanc and Tracey E. Bregmen standing by their sides this past Sunday.

Sponsored by MGM Grand and the LVCVA along with Sony Pictures and The Young and The Restless, the winning couple received stunning wedding flowers designed by MGM MIRAGE Events. The contemporary design played off the bride’s favorite color-yellow. Included were hundreds of summer yellow Sunflowers and Belles of Ireland in oversized chrome containers and glass vases. Guests stood from their modern, white leather chairs as the bride walked down a custom-designed wedding aisle runner lined with wheat grass. Wedding planning and coordination were flawlessly executed by Forever Grand-the wedding chapel at MGM Grand.

Costumed musicians from Cirque du Soleil were brought in to fill the warm summer air with wonderfully engaging ceremony music. Afterwards, guests enjoyed a special cake reception with the celebrities catered by The Signature.

Also included in the prize package- pampering, hair, and make-up at Cristophe Salon, a Couple's Dreaming Ritual spa treatment at Grand Spa, as well as dinner in the private dining room at Joël Robuchon.

Vision Gallery-King Dahl

Of the many wonderful features of the MGM MIRAGE Events studio, arguably the one that we are most proud of is our Vision Gallery. When designing this state-of-the-art event production facility, we were determined to offer our clients an environment that inspired their creativity, as well as ours.

The result is a room designed specifically to showcase designs, at full-scale, that we have prepared exclusively for their event. The Vision Gallery boasts 24’ high ceilings (the height of many of the larger LV ballrooms) and is equipped with unistrut suitable for rigging the many ceiling treatments and chandeliers that we continually develop. Dimmable ceiling-mounted power track is also plentiful, allowing the appropriate lighting fixtures to be rigged.

Along with custom-crafted built-in cabinets for charger, stemware, and flatware storage, a 52” flat screen monitor with network access is wall-mounted for digital presentations, floor plan review, and for viewing inventory items via our internet-based Active Image Management site.

A full wall of mirror completes the gallery, reflecting the décor in a way that adds depth and a feeling of quantity, further emulating a real-life scenario for clients to envision what is in store for their events.

While the Vision Gallery gives our clients a sneak peek at their final product, the gallery serves another purpose-fostering creativity for the many talented designers and artisans at MME. We use this gallery to explore, experiment, and play with innovative new ideas, many of which ultimately become reality as a result of the opportunity to experience them in a simulated event environment. A few examples are showcased here…

An 8’ Camphor Vine nest dangles from the ceiling enveloping a graceful, Galax Leaf-covered figure. Hundreds of fresh cumquats are suspended over an oversized vase spilling over with fresh peonies. In continuing with the organic impressions that only fresh product can evoke, the floral team collaborated on a 132” Galax Leaf Tablecloth. This “all-natural” linen coordinated perfectly with the custom-crafted Chameleon Chairs encircling it.

Our unique, white leather swirl lounge furniture is shown here accented with an experimental , eco-friendly floorlamp. The lamp’s base is a 6’ tall shaft of airroot, with a custom shade crafted from swamp cooler filter fibers sewn into a clear acetate shade. The result is a beautiful piece that has inspired the fabrication of an entire set of airroot lamps.

Completing this display stands an oversized frame with an artistic floral sculpture composed of vibrant yellow callas peering from bubble vases tied onto natural branches.

A new item introduced to our custom furniture line is the 8’ long Trough Coffee Table, accented with our chocolate and mocha ultra-suede ottomans. The lucite center channel covers crushed glass and micro LED’s. Hanging overhead, vases of callas and bromeliads dangle from a mahogany grid.

Rough-hewn wooden sculptures punctuated with dahlias, hypericum, and roses juxtapose beautifully against the swirling pattern of Cloth Connection's overlay.

Note the emotionally-charged abstract painting by Diane Butner hovering above a collection of hand-carved Buddha heads, with their offering of fresh oranges.

When my good friend David asked me to “run with the pack” with Design Dawgs, I was ecstatic! As someone whose design sensibilities and expressive event designs I’ve admired for years, the opportunity to share a few ideas with Dave’s readers and fans of AOO is something very special to me. As a designer, my lifestyle has always been influenced by freethinking artists, designers, and musicians in every creative discipline. Call it modern, avant-garde, experimental; anything that expands traditional thinking and pushes beyond the mainstream is to me, a source of inspiration and illumination!

Masterworks all begin with an initial idea, only to evolve and take shape as they are worked over and molded into finished pieces that touch the soul. They evoke feelings inside each one of us in a unique way. We’re moved by the convergence of color, form, rhythm, and sensuality. Someone who understands this convergence so well is the creative leader of the amazing MGM MIRAGE Events floral team, George Catechis. His floral artistry is superb, and can only be matched by his mind-blowing painting and sculpture.

As in all art, conceptualizing truly unique event environments involve the same principles and ingredients-color, form, rhythm, and sensuality-they are ever-present. But all too often, even the best event ideas flitter away after the event ends, never having the opportunity to be experienced again.

My team and I are passionate about the entire creative process. When we have the opportunity to embrace a look and allow a concept to evolve over the course of multiple events, something magical happens!

Recently we’ve been playing with a new aesthetic we refer to as “Gilded Earth”. Something we are so excited about we have infused it into four different events shown here. The essence of Gilded Earth is a melding of classic woodland forms, natural elements and contemporary styles. The result is organic and opulent – as timeless as it is modern, as familiar as it is imaginative.

Originally conceived for MGM Grand’s magnificent NYE Gala, the artistic approach was inspired by the featured performer, Sarah Brightman. After studying the artist's history, music, and on-stage persona, we found a consistent theme of earthy, natural elements throughout. We also discovered her personal commitment to the environment. All are aspects that colored our approach to the design and guest experience.

Images of the event space, beautifully captured by Dahl Photographers, show 180 individual table centerpieces created with hefty segments of tree trunks with their original cuts and angles, straight from the forest floor. Each one was completely unique, with the floral design dictated by the natural lines and curvature of the tree material. These natural centerpieces were juxtaposed with stunning metallic-gold sparkle velvet linens from Cloth Connection and encircled with place settings from Unique Tabletops and Chameleon Chairs .

Nature inspired the design from floor to ceiling. Overhead, five chandeliers – ranging in diameter from 30 to 50 feet – were created using billows of natural-fiber fabric that was hand-cut to resemble voluminous, ornate cobwebs. Form was as important as function, as these chandeliers also served to suspend Entertainment Director, Barry Morgan’s, aerial dancers as they performed throughout the evening.

Extensive theatrical lighting cast a warm glow across the event space. MGM Grand Productions artfully pin-spotted the tables from 40’ above to keep guests' eye-lines directed downward.

Kelly McKeon documented this next feature on a more intimate scale. I was quite honored to be asked to augment the culinary artistry of top chefs at Bellagio . The Vegas Uncork’d Gala, sponsored by Bon Appetit Magazine, featured incredible courses from Todd English and Isaac Carter, Michael Mina and Anthony Amoroso, Julian Serrano, Akira Back, Robert Moore, and Jean-Philippe Maury. Wines from Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada were exquisitely paired by Master Sommelier, Jason Smith. A menu fit for the heavens!

To compliment the fresh, organic ingredients used in these delicacies, all-natural furniture was designed with hand-carved tree stumps. Paying strict attention to our planet’s resources, all of the wood used is reclaimed from the forest floor of the Northern Sierras during fire clearing, so the environmental impact is zero. To merge the worlds of nature and upscale chic, we brought in a “new life” by gilding many of the wooden elements with gold and platinum. Forklifts and palette jacks have to be used to position these oversized set pieces, many weighing several hundred pounds!

As you’ve probably noticed, often I find that no décor can match the unparalleled beauty of the human form. Moroccan Day Beds looked complete with gorgeous models adding life and interaction to the static décor in this Gilded Earth lounge environment.

And note the Terrarium Chandeliers in the ceiling! Acrylic domes, repurposed from another event, were incorporated with living orchids, bromeliads, and birch branches, creating a floating garden overhead.

Finally, using gold to symbolize the preciousness of the earth, this last feature-an Art Nouveau Garden setting titled “Eve”.

A 22’ tall, all-natural tree was re-constructed after fork lifting its trunk and individual branches through the ballroom freight door. Soft haze fell over guests around the tree as 20’ copper “weeping trees” drizzled water from leaf to leaf into ponds at each side. The effect was calm, mesmerizing, and tranquil, enshrouding the ethereal dancers choreographed by Doug Johnson.

The fusion of classic nouveau architecture and form along with earthen elements created a setting that prompted many of the 1800 discerning guests to proclaim this was “the best event they have ever attended!” Such sweet words to my ears sending a sensation throughout my body- making me ponder that just possibly, another masterwork had been created.
